Leather Tanners

What vegetable tanning actually means

Bark, leaves, and time — why we still tan hides the slow way, and how that shows up in a wallet after two years.

What vegetable tanning actually means

Tannins, not chrome

Vegetable tanning uses plant tannins from bark and leaves. It takes weeks, not hours. The leather comes out firmer, takes a patina, and can be tooled or burnished.

Chrome-tanned leather is softer on day one and stays that colour. We use vegetable tan for bags, belts, and wallets because they should look better at year five than year one.
